About Da Lat

Da Lat, often referred to as the “City of Eternal Spring,” is a captivating provincial city and the capital of Lam Dong province, Vietnam. It is perched atop the picturesque Lam Vien plateau, nestled at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level, and covers a sprawling natural area of 393.29 square kilometers. This enchanting city has earned its place as one of Vietnam’s most renowned tourist destinations, thanks to its exceptional beauty and diverse landscapes. During the French colonial era, Da Lat was given the Latin name “Dat Aliis Laetitiam Aliis Temperiem,” which translates to “giving some people joy, giving others coolness.” Da Lat is aptly known by several endearing monikers, including the “flower city,” the “love city,” the “spring city,” and the “foggy city.”

Geographical Location

Da Lat is situated on the Lang Biang plateau in the northern part of Lam Dong province. It shares its borders with various districts, including Lac Duong to the north, Don Duong to the east and southeast, and Lam Ha and Duc Trong to the west and southwest. The city is enveloped by a series of majestic mountain ranges and peaks, including the Chohomui, Yo Da Myut, Chu Yang Kae, and Chu Yang Sinh ranges. To the east, the Bi Doup mountain range slopes down to the Dran plateau, while the Cho Proline range marks the southeastern boundary. The Voi Mountains and Yang Soreng encompass the south and southwest. Da Lat’s elevation averages 1,500 meters above sea level, with the highest point at the Museum House (1,532 meters) and the lowest point in the Nguyen Tri Phuong valley (1,398.2 meters).

The city’s topography is characterized by a central basin surrounded by gently sloping hills with heights ranging from 25 to 100 meters. Beyond this basin are mountain peaks, approximately 1,700 meters high, providing a natural wind shield for the central region. Notable peaks include Hon Ong and Hon Bo in the northeast, the Ba mountain range dominating the Lang Biang plateau, the Howling Wind mountain range to the east, and the mountains of Ta Nung in the southwest, including Pin Hatt and You Lou Rouet. The terrain gradually descends outside the plateau to elevations between 700 and 900 meters.

Climate

Da Lat’s unique climate is strongly influenced by its altitude and the surrounding pine forests. It exhibits characteristics of a temperate region, with an average temperature ranging from 18 to 21°C. The highest temperature seldom exceeds 30°C, and the lowest temperature never falls below 5°C. The city’s central area is shaped like a basin, and its surrounding mountain peaks create a protective wind shield. Da Lat experiences two distinct seasons: the rainy season from May to October and the dry season from November to April. Summer afternoons often see rain showers, sometimes accompanied by hail. The city receives an average annual rainfall of 1,562 millimeters, with a humidity level of 82%. Da Lat is not prone to storms, but it may experience high winds as a result of storms originating from the sea, due to the lack of mountain protection on the east side.

Tourism Potential

Da Lat, often compared to a “Little Paris,” was once celebrated for its dreamy and poetic ambiance, characterized by chilly nights, morning fog, and pine forests. However, the city’s architectural transformation and urbanization have somewhat altered this French-inspired charm. Despite these changes, tourism remains one of Da Lat’s strengths, drawing visitors to its captivating landscapes, lush forests, and captivating culture.

Two prominent landmarks in Da Lat include Cu Hill and Xuan Huong Lake. Cu Hill, situated in the city center next to Xuan Huong Lake, is often considered an integral part of the city’s beauty. During the city’s planning project in 1942, architect Lagisquet designated Cu Hill as a protected area, ensuring unobstructed views of the city. Later, this area was transformed into a renowned 18-hole golf course, which attracts golf enthusiasts from around the world. The origins of the name “Cu Hill” remain somewhat mysterious, with some suggesting that the gentle hills resemble the backs of ticks when viewed from a distance, while others associate it with golf, a sport colloquially known as “tickling.”

Xuan Huong Lake, positioned at the heart of Da Lat, is another captivating feature. Built in 1919, this artificial lake was created by damming a stream that flowed through the valley. It covers an area of 25 hectares and has a circumference of 5.1 kilometers. The area surrounding the lake boasts remarkable architectural structures, such as the Palace Hotel, Lam Vien Sports Field, Trade Union Guesthouse, and the Opera House, each contributing to the city’s artistic and aesthetic charm.

Da Lat, with its alluring blend of natural beauty and cultural uniqueness, continues to enchant travelers, promising a memorable and picturesque visit to this stunning highland city.
